The requirements for issuing from abroad
- A valid Brazilian photo ID: passport, RG or CNH.
- A CPF in regular status with the Federal Revenue.
- Being of legal age (or represented as the law provides, in specific cases).
- An internet connection with a camera for the video call with the RA agent.
- For an e-CNPJ: an active CNPJ and being the legal representative listed in the QSA or the articles.
Who can't — and what to do in each case
Suspended or cancelled CPF
The RA checks registration status before issuing; only a regular CPF passes · Suspended for a data inconsistency: update your details with the Revenue. Cancelled: request reinstatement. Pending regularisation: file the missing return
No valid Brazilian ID
A foreign document doesn't work for validation; an expired passport, RG or CNH doesn't either · Renew the passport at the consulate or the RG/CNH on a trip to Brazil; validation happens afterwards
Minor
The certificate is an identity with full legal effects · Wait until legal age or, in specific cases, act through legal guardians

Real case
Illustrative scenario. A Brazilian doctor on a humanitarian mission in Nairobi needs an e-CPF to sign the power of attorney that will let her brother sell her car in Belo Horizonte. She asks whether she can issue it while living abroad; the answer is yes, but the preliminary check shows her CPF as “pending regularisation” — she never filed the income tax return for the year she left the country. With guidance, her accountant files the overdue return and the status goes back to “regular” on the public lookup. The video validation is booked for a Sunday, the only day with stable internet at the camp, and the power of attorney is signed that same week. — The block was the CPF, not the distance

Before you decide
“I filed my definitive exit. Can I still?”
Yes. The definitive exit changes your tax status, not the existence of your CPF. With the CPF in order and a valid ID, issuance proceeds as normal.
“I only have a foreign passport.”
For validation we need a Brazilian document. If your Brazilian passport has expired, the consulate renews it; issuance comes after.
“My name changed after marriage.”
The ID presented must reflect the current name registered on the CPF. If they differ, update the Revenue first or renew the document; we guide the right order.
“And the time zone?”
The video call is booked at a time that works for you, from any continent. It isn't a requirement, just logistics.
