What the e-CAC electronic power of attorney is — and what it is not
It is a mandate recorded inside the Federal Revenue's system: you, the grantor, authorise a person or company, the attorney, to use specific e-CAC services in your name, for a term you define. The attorney logs in to e-CAC through their own access and chooses to act as your representative; every act is recorded as performed by them, on your behalf. It is neither the private nor the public power of attorney — the three instruments are compared in electronic power of attorney for Brazilians abroad — and it is worthless outside the Revenue: banks, notaries and the commercial registry cannot see it.
Who can grant
Any individual with an e-CPF and any company through its director's e-CNPJ. From abroad, the certificate is the entry door that does not depend on Brazilian biometrics.
Who can be the attorney
An individual, identified by CPF, or a legal entity, by CNPJ — the accountant, the accounting firm or a relative. The attorney logs in to e-CAC through their own means of access.
What is delegated
Services, one by one. You can release only the mailbox and returns, for instance, and keep payments and instalment plans out.
What is not transferred
Your identity. The attorney does not sign as you and never sees your password; they act on your behalf, with their own access, within what you ticked.

Scenario: the brother who handles the Revenue, without the password
Real case
Illustrative scenario. A Brazilian journalist lives in Asunción as correspondent for a São Paulo outlet. Until last year he dealt with the Revenue by sending his gov.br password to his brother in Ribeirão Preto, who filed his return. When the account was moved to facial validation, the brother could no longer get in — and neither could he, with an expired driving licence. The way out was an e-CPF A1, issued by video call on a Saturday morning — Asunción and London are three or four hours apart, depending on British Summer Time — and installed on his laptop. He logged in to e-CAC, registered his brother by CPF as attorney, ticked returns, lookups and mailbox, set the term to the end of the following year and confirmed. The brother logged in through his own access, saw the power of attorney active and filed the return. Payments were left out on purpose: the journalist makes his own. — A common pattern among those who delegate the annual return to relatives
Frequent mistakes when granting
Ticking every service
Gives the attorney more than they need. Select by task; if a new one comes up, grant again in minutes.
Confusing attorney and e-CNPJ holder
The accountant receives a power of attorney; they cannot be the holder of your company's e-CNPJ. The holder is the director in the QSA. Details in attorney and digital certificate abroad.

Granting and letting the certificate expire
The power of attorney stays valid until its date, but without a certificate you lose the means to check, extend or revoke it. Renew first.
Before you decide
“My accountant is in Brazil and I'm in another time zone”
The grant is made by you, alone, on e-CAC, at whatever hour you choose. Only the e-CPF validation has an appointment — and it is arranged in your time zone.
“My RG is old and my CNH has expired”
A valid Brazilian passport covers the validation. If no Brazilian document is current, the first step is renewing it; the power of attorney comes after the certificate.
“Is a power of attorney too much power?”
It is power in the right measure: chosen services, a set term, instant revocation. Far less than handing over a password, which is what most people do today.
“Isn't it simpler to fly to Brazil and sign a power of attorney at a notary?”
A notary's power of attorney does not go into e-CAC; the Revenue requires the electronic one. And it takes minutes with the e-CPF, from wherever you are — no ticket, no consulate.
