The ICP-Brasil chain in four tiers
Brazil's Public Key Infrastructure was created by Provisional Measure 2.200-2/2001 and works as a hierarchy of trust. At the top sits ITI, which operates the Root CA and accredits the Certification Authorities. The Certisign CA is one of those authorities: it generates and signs the holder's certificate, publishes the revocation list and answers OCSP queries. Below the CA come the Registration Authorities, and on the last tier is you, holder of the private key.
ITI (Root CA)
The federal body that sets ICP-Brasil's rules, audits the CAs and maintains the public signature validator.
Certisign CA
Certification Authority accredited by ITI. It issues the certificate, controls revocation and maintains the chain Brazilian systems recognise.
Registration Authority (RA)
The point of contact with the person: receives documents, validates identity and forwards the issuance request to the CA. This is where Certificado Digital Global operates.
Holder
The person who receives the certificate and alone keeps the private key and the password.
What an accredited RA does — and what it never does
Does: validate identity
Checks the Brazilian photo ID, the CPF status and, for an e-CNPJ, the holder's position in the company's QSA. That meeting, by video or in person, is the essence of accreditation.
Does: forward the issuance
After validation, the RA registers the request with the CA; the Certisign CA generates the certificate within its chain. The RA does not manufacture certificates on its own.
Never: access your password
The private key is born with the holder and the password is chosen by them. If anyone claiming to be an RA asks for your PIN, that is not an RA acting properly.
Never: speak for the CA
An RA describes its own service. The Certisign CA's policies, prices and timelines are published by the CA itself, not by us.
How Certificado Digital Global brings Certisign issuance to people outside Brazil
Certificado Digital Global is a Registration Authority accredited to the Certisign CA, based in London. It is a brand of Kindness in Business Consulting Ltd, a company registered in the United Kingdom under number 10386293 — the record can be looked up at Companies House. What we do is the RA stage: serve you in Portuguese and English, receive your documents on WhatsApp, validate your identity by video call with a registration agent (or in person in London) and forward the issuance to the CA. The certificate you receive carries the Root CA → Certisign CA chain, identical to any Certisign certificate issued inside Brazil.
The practical difference is where validation happens: instead of a service desk in a Brazilian capital, it happens on your screen, in your time zone, with you holding your Brazilian passport, RG or CNH up to the camera. For the CA and for the systems that will receive your signature, nothing changes. For someone living abroad, everything changes: crossing an ocean to prove who you are is no longer required.

How to check the chain in the certificate you received

Scenario: a lawyer's question in Geneva
Real case
Illustrative scenario. A Brazilian pharmacist working in Geneva needs to sign the lease on a flat she keeps in Curitiba. The letting agency's lawyer accepts ICP-Brasil signatures but asks in writing: “is the certificate genuinely Certisign or just some electronic signature?”. She issues an A1 e-CPF with us in a video call late in the Swiss afternoon, signs the lease in PAdES and replies to the lawyer with the ITI validator report, which lists the Certisign CA as issuer. The lease is registered without notarisation and without a consulate. — A typical situation for anyone who must prove not only the signature but the certificate's origin
Before you decide
“Does an RA in London issue the same certificate?”
Yes. The RA issues nothing: it validates identity and the Certisign CA issues. The file that reaches you has the same chain as a certificate validated at any RA in Brazil.
“My RG has expired”
Use your Brazilian passport or a CNH still within validity. What the RA requires is a valid Brazilian photo ID; the CPF must be in regular status.
“Will you have access to what I sign?”
No. The private key and the password stay with you alone. The RA's involvement ends the moment the CA issues the certificate.
“Is it worth it compared with travelling?”
A ticket to Brazil costs more than the certificate and still requires booking an in-person appointment there. Video validation settles it in your own hours, with no travel.
