The gov.br account levels
What do bronze, silver and gold mean?
They are the degrees of trust the government assigns to your account according to how you proved your identity. Bronze is the basic sign-up; silver requires validation through accredited banks or biometrics; gold requires facial biometrics matched against the CNH or electoral court database, or login with an ICP-Brasil digital certificate.
Which level do I need for what I want to do?
It depends on the service. Simple look-ups work at bronze; a good share of INSS, Federal Revenue and digital driving licence services require silver or gold; some sensitive acts open only at gold. Certificate holders don't need to track the list, because they already sit at the top level.
Why doesn't facial validation work for me?
Why does the app reject my face?
Facial validation compares your image with the Brazilian biometric database — the CNH photo or the electoral court's biometrics. Anyone who got their licence many years ago, never registered electoral biometrics or has an outdated photo on file tends to get failure after failure, and the app doesn't say why.
Can I use my bank to level up?
Validation through accredited banks leads to silver, not gold, and needs an active account and a working app tied to a Brazilian mobile number — something many people no longer have after a few years away.
Does my European passport or foreign ID count?
No. Identities such as eIDAS, BankID, DigiD, SPID or Chave Móvel don't talk to gov.br or to ICP-Brasil. The only Brazilian electronic identity you can obtain from abroad without biometrics is the e-CPF.
How does the certificate grant the gold level?
What happens when I log into gov.br with a certificate?
On the login screen, instead of a password, you choose the digital certificate option, select the e-CPF and enter its password or PIN. Because your identity was already checked by an ICP-Brasil Registration Authority, the system treats the access as gold.
Do I need a computer or does it work on a phone?
On a computer, with the A1 installed or the A3 token plugged in, the option appears directly. With a cloud A3, the cloud app mediates the login. For the first entry, the computer is the route with the fewest variables.
Is the gold level permanent?
The level follows the authentication method. While the certificate is valid and you log in with it, access is gold. Renewing the certificate changes nothing in the account.
What opens up at the gold level

Statements, benefit requests, tracking of applications and services for retirees and pensioners, on the website or in the app authenticated through gov.br.
e-CAC through gov.br
The Revenue's portal accepts entry with a silver or gold gov.br account. With an e-CPF you can also choose to enter directly with the certificate, bypassing gov.br.
Digital driving licence wallet
The digital CNH and the related traffic services use the gov.br account to authenticate the holder.

Before deciding
“Will I need someone in Brazil?”
No. Identity validation is done by video call with an RA agent, and the gov.br login is done by you, wherever you are.
“I only have an old RG”
The RG works, as long as it is valid and legible. A Brazilian passport or CNH in date are also accepted.
“What if my CPF has an issue?”
Issuance requires a CPF in regular standing. If there is a pending matter, we explain how to sort it first — often through e-CAC itself — and resume issuance right after.
“Is it worth it just for gov.br?”
The same e-CPF that unblocks gov.br signs contracts, accesses e-CAC and grants powers of attorney. The gold level is one of the doors, not the only one.
