What sits inside an e-CPF
An e-CPF is a small file signed by AC Certisign that binds your person to a cryptographic key. When a Brazilian system receives it, it reads four essential pieces of information and checks the CA's signature over each of them.
Your full name
Exactly as it appears in the CPF database — which is why name mismatches must be fixed before issuance.
Your CPF number
The field systems use to find your record: Federal Revenue, INSS, courts, commercial registries.
Your public key
The half of the key pair anyone may see; the other half, the private key, is yours alone. That pair is what makes signing and authentication possible.
Validity and issuer
Start and end dates, the issuing CA's name and the chain up to ITI's Root CA. Without that chain, a certificate is not ICP-Brasil.
What the e-CPF is not
Where the e-CPF digital identity identifies you
- The gov.br portal, with gold-tier access and no need for the app's facial check.
- Federal Revenue's e-CAC, for returns, pending issues and electronic powers of attorney.
- The courts' electronic case systems, as a party or as a lawyer.
- Notary platforms, including e-Notariado, for acts by video call.
- Commercial registries and professional council systems that accept ICP-Brasil.
- Private services — banks, insurers, signing platforms — that recognise the certificate as proof of identity.
Why it works abroad when biometrics fail
The best-known route to prove identity online in Brazil is gov.br's facial recognition, which compares your face with the photo on your driving licence or in the electoral database. Anyone who never held a CNH, registered to vote decades ago or has changed in appearance tends to get stuck at that step — and from abroad there is no service desk to sort it out. The e-CPF follows a different logic: your identity is checked by a human registration agent, over video, with documents in hand. From then on the certificate vouches for you on every system, with no fresh biometric check at each login. That difference is what makes it the only Brazilian identity fully reachable from outside the country.
Real case
Illustrative scenario. A Brazilian physiotherapist in Vienna needed to check her own contribution record on Meu INSS and reply to a notice on e-CAC. gov.br's facial check rejected three attempts: the only photo of her in Brazilian databases was her voter registration picture, taken at 18. With an e-CPF validated by video she logged into gov.br at gold tier, opened Meu INSS, answered the notice and granted an electronic power of attorney to her accountant — all in one evening, from Vienna. — A recurring situation among Brazilians who left the country before biometric driving licences
Before you decide

“My RG is old. Will it do?”
Any valid Brazilian photo ID works: passport, RG or CNH. If the RG is badly worn, the passport is usually the better choice.
“Could someone use my digital identity without me?”
