Renewal or new issuance?
Is renewing different from issuing again?
In practice, no. Every ICP-Brasil certificate has a fixed term and cannot be extended: “renewing” means going through a new identity validation and receiving a new certificate, with new keys and a new validity. The advantage of renewing with the same RA is that you already know the flow and your details are checked faster.
Do I need to present the same documents as the first time?
Yes: a Brazilian photo ID within validity and a regular CPF. If your passport has expired since the first issuance, use a valid RG or CNH — or renew the passport first.
Can I renew before expiry and use both?
You can. The old certificate remains valid until its date; the new one starts at issuance. Renewing ahead of time is what avoids a gap without a signature.
What if it has already expired?
My e-CPF expired. Have I lost anything?
Nothing signed during its validity loses effect. What you lose is the ability to sign and log in from now on — until you issue the new one. The procedure is the same as a renewal: video call, documents, issuance.
With it expired, can I get into e-CAC?
Not with the certificate. If your gov.br account is at silver or gold, it still opens e-CAC; if it's bronze, the way out is the new certificate.
Is there a fine or block for letting it expire?
There is no penalty for the certificate itself. The risk lies in the obligations that depend on it and don't wait: returns, notices, corporate acts.

Real case
Illustrative scenario. A Brazilian lawyer lives in Panama City and works at an international arbitration firm. She keeps a rented flat and investments in Brazil and files her income tax every year through an accountant in Belo Horizonte, to whom she granted an electronic power of attorney with her A1 e-CPF. The certificate expired in February; the power of attorney, which had the same term, expired with it. In April, the accountant needs to amend the previous year's return to include a forgotten rental payment and discovers he no longer has access. She can't get into e-CAC: gov.br bronze, facial validation rejected. Check your documents in advance
Passport and a regular CPF are what most often holds up renewals for people abroad. Sort them out before booking the session.
Align with the tax calendar and booked acts
Income tax return, deeds, shareholder meetings: renew before the deadlines, not in the middle of them.
Reassess the model

Renew the power of attorney along with the certificate
If your accountant holds an electronic power of attorney with a term, grant the new one in the same session in which the new certificate enters e-CAC.

“Do I need to go back to Brazil to renew?”

“My passport expired together with the e-CPF.”
Use a valid RG or CNH. If you have neither, passport renewal at the consulate comes first — and the certificate's right after.
“Will the new certificate have the same password?”
No. You set a new password at issuance. The RA never knows the old one or the new one.
“Does renewing cost the same as issuing?”
The price follows the model and validity chosen, from €200. There is no extra fee for it being a renewal.
