Brazilian digital stamp: the three meanings of the phrase, what each one requires and when the date makes a difference

When someone asks for a “Brazilian digital stamp”, they may mean three different things: the ICP-Brasil timestamp, which proves date and time; the visual mark a signature leaves on a PDF; or the electronic authentication done by a notary. This guide separates the three, shows what each demands and walks you through applying a timestamp when a deadline, a contract or a creation of yours depends on proving “when”. By the end you know which of the three to ask for — and can issue the certificate that serves all three on WhatsApp.

The three meanings of “digital stamp”

What it is

Proof of date and time issued by a Time Stamping Authority (TSA) accredited to ITI · The box with name, CPF and date the signer draws on the page · A notary's act attesting that a copy is true or that a signature is genuine

Legal value

Proves the document existed at that instant and has not changed since · None on its own; it is purely visual. The value lies in the signature embedded in the file · The notary's public faith

What it requires

ICP-Brasil certificate + a signer with TSA · ICP-Brasil certificate + any PAdES signer · A certificate for e-Notariado + a notary

Who asks for it

Agencies with deadlines, contracts, registration of works and software · People who want to “see” the signature on the page · Banks, Detran, offices that demand authentication

When the timestamp genuinely matters

Deadlines

Appeals, defences and submissions with a cut-off date: the TSA's stamp fixes the moment of signing independently of your computer's clock, which anyone can change.

Contracts with a term

When the signing date sets the start of obligations, penalties or adjustments, the timestamp removes any argument about who signed when.

Intellectual property

Texts, code, projects and brands in the making: a signed and timestamped file proves that version existed on that date, ahead of any formal registration.

Long-term records

The timestamp lets the signature be verified even after the certificate expires, because it anchors validation to the moment it was still valid.

A case where the date was worth more than the signature

Real case

Illustrative scenario. A Brazilian illustrator in Oslo had been developing the visual identity of her own brand to launch in Brazil. Before showing the portfolio to a prospective partner, she wanted proof that the drawings already existed on that date. She issued her e-CPF by video call, signed the portfolio PDF in PAdES with a timestamp from an accredited TSA and kept the file. Months later, when the authorship of one of the logos was questioned, she produced the stamped file: ITI's validator showed the TSA's date, earlier than the meeting. The conversation ended there. — A frequent use among creatives and developers living abroad who produce for the Brazilian market

What about the visual “stamp” and the notary one?

I need the signature to appear on the page. How do I do that?

Almost every PAdES signer lets you draw a visible field with name, CPF and date; it is optional and does not affect validity. The real signature sits in the file's metadata, not in the drawing.

I was asked for “digital authentication” of a copy. Is that a timestamp?

No. It is a notary act: the notary checks the copy and applies their electronic signature. From abroad this is done through e-Notariado with your certificate. The case of someone needing a notarised signature is in digital signature authentication.

Does an ICP-Brasil signature without a stamp already carry a date?

It does, but it is the date of the signer's computer, with no external guarantee. For deadlines and disputes, only the TSA's stamp serves as proof of time.

Common objections before buying

“Is timestamping expensive?”

The TSA's service is charged separately from the certificate and usually sold in bundles of stamps; for most personal uses a small bundle lasts for years.

“My CNH has expired. Now what?”

A valid Brazilian passport or an RG covers the validation. An expired CNH is not accepted.

“Does the TSA learn what I sign?”

No. The signer sends the TSA only a cryptographic digest (hash) of the document, never its content.

“London hours don't match mine.”

Validation is booked around your availability, on any continent; the time difference is our problem, not yours.

Transparent pricing

From €200

That is the price of the e-CPF, which signs with legal validity and enables timestamping in any compatible signer. TSA stamps have their own price, set by the service provider.

Model (A1 or A3) and validity determine the final price. Ask on WhatsApp and receive a quote for your case.
